These hidden parts, known as the “shadow self,” are usually formed through painful experiences, rejection, trauma, or the need to survive emotionally. Alongside journaling and self-reflection, I also use oracle cards as a tool to help my clients to self-discovery and emotional awareness. I do not use oracle cards for future prophecy or prediction. Instead, they help uncover emotions, patterns, hidden truths, and the answers that may already exist deep within yourself but were simply buried beneath fear, confusion, or denial. Shadow work also requires stepping outside of your comfort zone, because healing often asks you to face uncomfortable truths, challenge old beliefs, and sit with emotions you may have avoided for a long time.

Shadow work is often called “facing your demons” because facing yourself, your wounds, traumas, fears, pain, and suppressed emotions is not easy. It can be painful to revisit the parts of yourself that were hurt, rejected, abandoned, or silenced. There are moments where healing feels heavy because you are no longer running away from what hurt you. Instead, you are finally allowing yourself to acknowledge it, understand it, and heal from it.

Although shadow work can feel uncomfortable, it allows you to understand yourself more deeply. The goal is not to judge yourself, but to become aware of the patterns and emotions that quietly influence your life. Growth happens when you are willing to gently explore the unfamiliar parts of yourself, even when it feels uncomfortable.

Here are some powerful shadow work questions for self-discovery:

Childhood &
